Our History

The Catholic Church has a long history in Jackson County.  The first Catholic Mass was celebrated in 1674 at a Spanish mission near the Florida Caverns State Park.  Around 1890, Catholics in the Marianna area began celebrating Mass at the Sarah Baker Milton home on a monthly basis or whenever a visiting priest arrived.

In 1947, Marianna became a Parish, and the first Mass celebrated in the current church building was in July, 1948.  Some of the first members were: Ms. Dick Yost, Carl and Helen Neal, Rita Gortemoller, Catherine Jensen, Jimmy Harkins, various members of the Milton family and Charles and Nell Goldsboro (father of Bobby Goldsboro, the singer.) Many of these families continue to reside in Jackson County.

Bishop T.J. Toolen dedicated the church in 1950.  Since that time, a rectory, parish hall, convent for nuns who periodically assisted here, office, and Thrift Shop have been added to the property.
